Where water actually gets in
| Point | Why it fails | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| The zip | It is the main way in | A storm flap over it, or a coated zip |
| The seams | The thread pierces the fabric | Taped or welded seams |
| The base | It soaks up when set on wet ground | Reinforced base, or a different material |
| The back panel | Sweat wets it from inside | A separated mesh, not fabric against the back |
Materials
- Treated nylon: light, dries fast. The treatment loses effect over the years and can be reactivated with a specific product.
- PU or plastic coating: a better barrier, less breathable, stiffer in cold weather.
- Waxed canvas: holds up well and ages with character, but it is heavy and needs looking after.
