Briefcase, satchel or document case: three ways to carry your papers
The laptop briefcase is the most complete: a padded compartment for the machine, another for files, a front pocket for the charger and notebook, two handles and a removable shoulder strap. The satchel, taller than wide or closed by a flap, holds an A4 folder upright and keeps a classic look. The document case is flat and carried under the arm: it is enough for a meeting where you only bring a few sheets, a pad and a tablet. Smooth, oiled or Crazy Horse leather: what the material changes
Smooth leather keeps its first day look for a long time and goes with a suit. Oiled leather, or Crazy Horse, is fed with waxes and oils: it marks on the folds, lightens when rubbed, then darkens with time, and every scratch becomes patina. Full grain keeps the natural surface of the hide, the most resistant part. Caring for a leather work bag
A dry cloth removes dust, a barely damp cloth wipes a fresh stain. Two or three times a year, a smooth leather cream applied with a soft cloth then buffed keeps the hide from drying at the folds. Oiled leather is revived with a suitable wax or grease. Stored away, the bag keeps its shape if stuffed with paper and kept out of the sun and away from heat.
Frequently asked questions
Will my 15.6 inch laptop fit? Several models state it, but measure your machine rather than trusting the diagonal: compare its width and height with the dimensions in the table, keeping one or two centimetres of margin.
What is the difference between a work bag and an attaché case? The work bag is soft and often carried on the shoulder; the attaché case is rigid, with handles and clasps. Both carry A4 files, the case protects them better from creases.
Will the leather scratch? In the first weeks, yes, especially oiled leather. These marks blend into the patina; smooth leather shows them less.
