Sling bag vs crossbody: a crossbody bag hangs at the hip on a long adjustable strap, while a sling bag sits against the chest or the back and opens without being taken off. The right choice depends on what you carry and how you move. This guide compares the two formats on the sizes and weights of leather models from our men’s crossbody bags and men’s chest bags.
What is the difference between a sling bag and a crossbody bag?
A crossbody bag hangs at the hip on a long adjustable strap, whereas a sling bag, also called a chest bag, rides across the chest or the back on a single strap, with a thicker body that follows the torso. Both leave your hands free, but they do not open the same way.
Our guide to the types of bags for men places both formats among the others. A crossbody bag swings a little as you walk and is slid forward to open. A sling bag stays put, which makes it steadier on a bike, in a crowd or on public transport, but it takes more adjusting and is harder to take off.
Sizes: eight models from our ranges compared
The table lists the dimensions and weights stated in the product pages of eight cowhide or genuine leather models, with inches in brackets. Outside volume is length times height times depth: it is not capacity, because the inside is smaller. The product pages say the sizes are taken by hand and can vary by a centimetre or two; for the chest bag with a flap, the sizes are those of the parcel.
| Model | Format | Size in cm (in) | Outside volume | Stated weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brown leather retro chest bag | sling | 16 x 20 x 9 (6.3 x 7.9 x 3.5) | about 2.9 L | not published |
| Chest bag with flap and zip | sling | 31 x 18 x 6 (12.2 x 7.1 x 2.4) | about 3.3 L | 650 g (1.43 lb) |
| Crazy horse triangle sling bag | sling | 34 x 21 x 7 (13.4 x 8.3 x 2.8) | about 5.0 L | not published |
| Distressed cowhide sling bag | sling | 32 x 17 x 10 (12.6 x 6.7 x 3.9) | about 5.4 L | 500 g (1.10 lb) |
| Mini flap bag with buckle | crossbody | 13 x 18.5 x 3 (5.1 x 7.3 x 1.2) | about 0.7 L | 160 g (0.35 lb) |
| Vertical crossbody bag with pockets | crossbody | 16 x 19 x 5 (6.3 x 7.5 x 2.0) | about 1.5 L | 310 g (0.68 lb) |
| Small zipped crossbody bag | crossbody | 16 x 20 x 7 (6.3 x 7.9 x 2.8) | about 2.2 L | not published |
| Full-grain laptop messenger bag | crossbody | 40 x 28 x 10 (15.7 x 11.0 x 3.9) | about 11.2 L | 830 g (1.83 lb) |
Two gaps stand out. The four sling bags are 6 to 10 cm (2.4 to 3.9 in) deep and 2.9 to 5.4 L in outside volume, while the three vertical crossbody bags stay under 7 cm (2.8 in) deep and 2.2 L. A crossbody bag climbs much higher once it becomes a messenger bag: 11.2 L for 830 g, enough for a 16-inch laptop, as our guide on how to measure laptop size explains.
Which bag for which contents: phone, tablet or a day’s kit?
For a phone, a wallet and keys, a small vertical crossbody bag of 1.5 to 2.2 L is enough; for a tablet or a day’s kit, a sling bag of about 5 L or a messenger bag is safer. The tablet sets the limit, so measure the device before choosing the bag.
According to Apple, the iPad mini is 195.3 mm (7.69 in) tall and 132.6 mm (5.22 in) wide, with an 8.5-inch screen. The small vertical models in the table, 19 to 20 cm tall outside, therefore leave no more than 5 mm before the leather and the seams are subtracted. The triangle sling bag states a 7.9-inch tablet in a main compartment of 34 x 21 cm.
How much weight can a one-shoulder bag carry?
A bag should not weigh more than 10% of your body weight, which is 8 kg (17.6 lb) for a man of 80 kg (176 lb). A strap worn diagonally spreads the load better than a bag on one shoulder, which favours the crossbody and the sling over a plain shoulder bag.
The rule comes from Action Sport Physio, a physiotherapy network in Quebec, which also advises using the strap diagonally when the bag has one. The empty weights in the table, from 160 g to 830 g, leave almost the whole budget for the contents. For heavier loads, the choice between a backpack and a messenger bag changes how the weight sits on your shoulders.
How should you adjust and wear each format?
A sling bag is adjusted to sit against the chest without pressing on the shoulder, a crossbody bag to fall at the hip, around belt height. A strap that is too long makes a crossbody bag swing; a strap that is too short makes a sling bag tight across the chest.
Our guides on how to wear a sling bag and how to wear a crossbody bag give the adjustments step by step.
The decision rule by use
The format depends on the contents, the way you travel and the outfit.
| Your use | Deciding factor | Format to look at |
|---|---|---|
| Phone, wallet, keys, in town | minimal volume, quick access | vertical crossbody bag of 1.5 to 2.2 L |
| Bike, crowds, public transport | bag held against the body | sling bag |
| Tablet and a day’s kit | compartment over 20 cm | sling bag of 5 L or messenger bag |
| 16-inch laptop | padded compartment | laptop messenger bag of about 11 L |

Conclusion: sling bag or crossbody in three questions
The rule comes down to three questions: what must you carry, how do you move, and what do you wear. A phone and a wallet call for a small crossbody bag, a bike ride or a crowd for a sling bag, and a tablet for a format over 20 cm on a side. Both formats are gathered in our ranges of men’s crossbody bags, sold from 14,90 €, and men’s chest bags, from 14,90 €.
Frequently asked questions
Is a sling bag safer than a crossbody bag?
A sling bag stays against the chest where you can see it, whereas a crossbody bag hangs at the hip, so the sling is easier to watch in a crowd as long as its zip is closed.
Which bag should I choose for a phone and a wallet?
For a phone, a wallet and keys, a small vertical leather crossbody bag of 1.5 to 2.2 L, like the two 16 cm wide models in the table, is enough and stays discreet.
Does an 8-inch tablet fit in a sling bag?
An 8-inch tablet fits in a sling bag whose compartment is more than 20 cm tall, like the 34 x 21 cm triangle model that states a 7.9-inch tablet, but not in the small vertical formats.
Can you wear a sling bag on your back?
A sling bag can also be worn on the back by sliding it over the shoulder, which frees the chest while walking or cycling and keeps the bag within reach with a simple shrug.
