Backpack vs Messenger Bag: How to Choose for Daily Carry

Backpack vs messenger bag comes down to what you carry and how far you carry it. A backpack spreads the load over both shoulders and leaves your hands free; a messenger bag hangs across the body, opens without being put down and dresses up a city outfit. This guide compares the two formats on real measurements, taken from five leather models in our range of leather messenger bags for men and men’s leather backpacks, and ends with a decision rule.

Carrying the load: two shoulders or one

A backpack puts its weight on both shoulders, a messenger bag on one. With a folder, a tablet and a notebook the difference is hard to feel; with a laptop, its charger, a water bottle and lunch the load is counted in pounds, and the backpack keeps the advantage over a full day. A messenger bag is adjusted to sit on the hip, and the easiest habit is to change shoulders part way through a commute. To judge how much a backpack can hold, our guide to backpack sizes gives the reference points in litres.

Access and look: where the messenger bag wins

A messenger bag opens without being put down: it slides round to the hip, your hand goes under the flap and you close it in one move. A backpack has to be taken off or turned round to be opened, which matters on a train or in a lift. As for look, the flap and the strap give the messenger bag a dressier appearance that suits a jacket or a suit, while the backpack reads as more sporty. Our article on what a messenger bag is details its shapes, the comparison messenger bag vs briefcase sets it against the work case, and the guide on how to wear a crossbody bag covers strap length.

Size and weight: five models measured

The table gives the dimensions, the outer volume that follows from them and the empty weight of five cowhide models, taken from their product pages. Outer volume is length, height and depth multiplied together: it is not the capacity, because the leather and the lining take up part of it. For the leather-lined messenger bag the dimensions are those of the parcel.

Model Format Size in cm Size in inches Outer volume Empty weight What the page states
Flap messenger bag, leather lining messenger bag 27 x 24 x 9 10.6 x 9.4 x 3.5 about 5.8 L 495 g (1.09 lb) notebook, compact tablet, keys; no laptop
Crazy horse messenger bag, 35 cm messenger bag 35 x 25 x 8 13.8 x 9.8 x 3.1 about 7.0 L not published A4 folder, tablet; a very thin ultrabook to be measured
Full-grain laptop messenger bag messenger bag 40 x 28 x 10 15.7 x 11.0 x 3.9 about 11.2 L 830 g (1.83 lb) laptop up to 16 inches, padded compartment
Crazy horse backpack, flat back backpack 42 x 29 x 10 16.5 x 11.4 x 3.9 about 12.2 L 1.45 kg (3.20 lb) separate laptop compartment, cotton lining
Crazy horse backpack, strapped flap backpack 42 x 29 x 16 16.5 x 11.4 x 6.3 about 19.5 L 1.8 kg (3.97 lb) flap with two buckled straps, laptop compartment

Two gaps stand out. Volume first: the messenger bags run from 5.8 to 11.2 L, the backpacks from 12.2 to 19.5 L. Weight next: the lighter of the two backpacks, at 1.45 kg, weighs about 1.7 times the heaviest messenger bag, at 830 g. The page of the strapped backpack says it plainly: a comparable nylon model weighs around 600 g, and the difference comes from the thickness of the leather.

Laptops: which format protects the machine

A laptop fits in both formats, provided the bag was designed for it. Both backpacks in the table have a dedicated compartment, separate from the main volume. The laptop messenger bag states room for up to 16 inches with a padded compartment, and the 35 cm crazy horse messenger bag only takes a very thin ultrabook, to be measured before buying. The leather-lined messenger bag is not made for a laptop at all. Our ranges of laptop messenger bags and laptop backpacks for men gather the models built for this use.

Leather changes the choice: weight, patina and care

A thick leather keeps the shape of the bag even when it is loaded, but it weighs. That is the case of crazy horse, a full-grain cowhide leather impregnated with oils and waxes, whose colour lightens at folds and scuffs and then evens out over time. The ageing shows on a messenger bag as on a backpack; our article on leather patina explains what changes from one leather to another. A soft dry cloth is enough day to day, and the guide to how to condition leather gives the frequency of treatments.

The decision rule by use

The format is chosen by looking at what goes in the bag and how far it travels, not at the trend of the moment. The table below matches each use with the format that suits it best.

Your use What decides Format to look at
A4 folder, tablet, notebook, short city trip quick access, dressier look messenger bag of about 7 L
Client meetings in a jacket or a suit flap and strap flap messenger bag
16-inch laptop, charger, a few belongings padded compartment laptop messenger bag or flat-back backpack
Laptop, bottle, lunch, a half-hour walk load spread over two shoulders backpack
A trip of several days volume and free hands backpack of about 19 L

Conclusion: backpack or messenger bag in three questions

The rule comes down to three questions: what has to be carried, over what distance, and in what outfit. A folder and a tablet on a short trip call for a messenger bag; a laptop and lunch over a full day call for a backpack. Both formats are gathered in our ranges of leather messenger bags, sold 17,90 €, and leather backpacks, sold 45,45 €.

Frequently asked questions

Is a messenger bag worse for your back than a backpack?

A messenger bag loads a single shoulder, so beyond a light load a backpack stays more comfortable, while a messenger bag worn across the body and switched to the other side part way through is fine for a folder and a tablet.

Which is better for work with a laptop, a backpack or a messenger bag?

For work with a laptop, a charger and lunch, a backpack with a dedicated compartment suits best, and a laptop messenger bag is enough when you only carry the machine and a few papers.

Does a messenger bag go with a suit?

A leather messenger bag with a flap goes with a suit, because its flap and strap look dressier than a backpack does.

Is a leather backpack heavy?

A leather backpack weighs 1.45 kg and 1.8 kg empty on the two models in our range, against 495 g for a messenger bag with a leather lining.
