Ratchet Belt for Men

A ratchet belt for men has no holes: the strap moves notch by notch through the buckle and locks on its own, and a lever under the buckle releases it. This range brings together our belts with an automatic ratchet buckle, in cowhide leather or in PU leather, each one checked against its product page. Classic pin buckle belts stay in the men's leather belt range.

How a ratchet buckle works

A track of small notches runs under the strap. When you pull the strap through the buckle, a ratchet clamp moves from one notch to the next and stops it from slipping back. To loosen it, press the lever: the clamp opens and the strap slides back. On our 3.5 cm cowhide model the notches are about 5 mm apart, while the holes of a classic belt are usually 2 to 3 cm apart. That is the whole point: you tighten exactly where you need, after a meal or when you change trousers, and never end up between two holes. The leather belt with automatic buckle describes this fine adjustment.

Cowhide or PU leather

Two of our ratchet belts have a cowhide strap, in black or brown, from 110 to 140 cm. The cowhide ratchet belt with a cut to fit strap has a brushed metal buckle with no logo. Cowhide develops a patina where it works and needs a colourless cream once or twice a year.

The others are black PU leather, stated as such on every product page. PU leather keeps a smooth surface and a deep black, does not crease at the belt loop and wipes clean with a damp cloth. It does not patina: the belt stays as it was on the first day, like the black automatic belt with a pinless buckle.

Choosing width and length

Our straps are 3.4 or 3.5 cm wide, a width that fits the loops of suit trousers as well as jeans or chinos. For the length, take the size just above your waist measurement, or about 20 cm more than it: one buyer wears the 110 cm version with a 90 cm waist.

Most of our ratchet belts can be shortened, and the product page says so. The buckle comes off, you cut the extra strap while keeping a few centimetres of margin, then you put the buckle back and close the clamp.

Frequently asked questions

How do you loosen a ratchet belt?

Press the lever under the buckle: the clamp opens and the strap slides back freely. Let go of the lever to lock the strap again at the notch you want.

Can you shorten a ratchet belt?

Yes. The buckle comes off, you cut the strap to the length you need, then you fit the buckle again.

Can you wear a ratchet belt with a suit?

Yes. With a 3.4 or 3.5 cm strap and a plain buckle, matt black or brushed, it works under a jacket as well as with jeans.

What is the difference between cowhide and PU leather on a belt?

Cowhide develops a patina over time and needs cream. PU leather keeps its original look and cleans with a damp cloth. Both work with the same ratchet buckle.
