How to Clean a Longchamp Bag: Nylon, Canvas and Leather

How to clean a Longchamp bag depends on what it is made of. A nylon or canvas Le Pliage is cleaned by hand with a cloth, a little mild soap and lukewarm water, rinsed straight away, blotted and left to dry with the handles down. The leather flap and handles, and fully leather models, only ever get a damp cloth and a colorless cream. Machine washing is not what Longchamp recommends, yet plenty of owners do it: I explain the method they use, and the risks you take with it, further down. The same rules apply to any nylon or canvas tote with leather trim, including the men’s tote bags we sell.
What Longchamp itself recommends
The brand’s own care page is short, and it is the safest starting point. For the canvas and nylon body, it says to wipe the surface with a soft cloth dampened with fresh water, then rinse the canvas with warm water right away, blot it with a soft cloth and let the bag dry with the handles down. For leather, it is a cloth dampened with fresh water, then a dry cloth, then 24 to 48 hours of drying, handles down.
Once the leather is dry, Longchamp suggests a colorless wax or cream, massaged in small circles, left for 2 to 8 hours, then buffed with a chamois or a cotton cloth. The same page asks you to keep the bag away from strong light, intense heat and humidity, and to store it in its original dust bag, stuffed with tissue paper, when you are not using it.
How to hand wash a Le Pliage, step by step
Hand washing is the method I recommend first, because it keeps water away from the leather. It takes about fifteen minutes plus drying time.
- Empty the bag completely and turn it upside down to shake out crumbs and dust from the corners.
- Brush off dry dirt with a soft brush or a dry cloth before any water touches the fabric, otherwise you spread it.
- Mix a few drops of mild soap (a gentle dish soap or a detergent for delicates) into a bowl of lukewarm water.
- Wipe the nylon with a cloth dipped in the solution and wrung out until it is only damp. Work in small circles, section by section.
- Rinse immediately with a second cloth dampened with clean water, so no soap film dries on the fabric.
- Blot, then dry at room temperature, handles down and flap open, away from radiators and direct sun.

Can you wash a Longchamp bag in the washing machine?
You can, but at your own risk. Longchamp’s care instructions only describe cleaning by hand, and the leather parts of a Le Pliage are not made to be soaked. Owners who machine wash anyway follow a very cautious routine: bag turned inside out, placed in a mesh laundry bag, a small dose of detergent for delicates, a cold wool or delicate cycle (30 °C, about 86 °F, at most), an extra rinse if the machine offers one, and no spin. The bag then dries in the open air, still inside out, never in a dryer.
This question matters more than any other on the topic. In our own French search data over the last 90 days, about a quarter of the impressions our site earned on searches naming Longchamp (364 of 1,342) came from queries that asked specifically about the washing machine. My advice is to try everything else first, and to reserve the machine for a bag that is already worn enough that a mistake would not break your heart. Removing ink, grease and other stains
Stains call for a targeted product rather than more water. Always test on a hidden spot first, such as the inside of the flap or the bottom of the bag.
- Ink: dab, do not rub, with a cotton swab barely moistened with rubbing alcohol, changing swabs as the ink lifts. The same technique on leather is detailed in our guide on how to remove ink from leather.
- Grease or food: a drop of dish soap on a damp cloth, worked gently, then rinsed with a clean damp cloth.
- Makeup: a makeup wipe without oil often lifts foundation from nylon; follow with a water rinse.
- Water rings on the leather: dampen the whole leather panel evenly with a barely damp cloth so it dries in one tone.

Cleaning leather Longchamp models
Le Pliage Cuir, Le Foulonné and the other all leather lines follow the leather routine only: a soft cloth dampened with clean water over the whole surface, a dry cloth straight after, then a long rest, handles down, before any cream. Never put these bags in a machine, and never use dish soap or alcohol on the leather.

Drying and storing it so it keeps its shape
Most damage happens after the wash, not during it. A folded nylon bag that is put away damp can develop a musty smell and, on the leather parts, spots of mold. Let it dry completely, open, for at least a full day, then store it unfolded or loosely folded, stuffed with tissue paper, in its dust bag or a cotton pillowcase.
