Is Leather Waterproof? The Honest Answer, Finish by Finish

Cuir imperméable, gouttes de pluie perlant sur le cuir d'une sacoche

Is leather waterproof? No. Tanned hide is hydrophilic by nature: it absorbs water, swells, and dries stiff. What survives rain is the FINISH on top, pigment, wax, oil or a modern water repellent. So one leather messenger bag shrugs off a downpour while the one beside it spots after thirty seconds, with the same hide underneath.

Water resistant, water repellent, waterproof

Term What it means On leather
Water repellent water beads and rolls off for a few minutes waxed or treated hides, the common case
Water resistant survives a short shower without marking pigmented leather with a thick finish
Waterproof nothing gets through, even submerged no uncoated leather, ever

Thirty seconds and one drop of water settle which one you own. Beads: the finish is working. Sinks in and darkens: the hide is raw or aniline, the most beautiful and the most vulnerable grade. More on that in our guide to leather patina.

What actually makes leather shed rain

Suede and nubuck sit at the opposite end: their nap is open fibre with nothing sealing it, so rain darkens them instantly and dries into blotches. They need a dedicated spray before first use, not after the first soaking, and the difference between the two grades is set out in our guide to suede vs nubuck.

  • Pigment: a surface film that closes the pores, highly effective and less alive to the eye.
  • Wax and oil: they saturate the fibre so water finds nowhere to go.
  • Tannage: vegetable tanned leather drinks noticeably more than chrome tanned.
  • Coated leather: waterproof by construction, rain and splashes are a non issue.

Of the 1,167 bags published on our site, 348 are leather and 464 nylon, which is exactly why the question comes up: nylon ignores rain, leather asks for a habit. Patent finishes sit at the extreme end of that scale, as explained in what is patent leather.

How to waterproof a leather bag

  1. Clean it first. Spray over dust and you seal the dust in.
  2. Test the product on a hidden panel, under the strap or inside a flap.
  3. Spray from twenty centimetres in a thin, even pass, never to the point of running.
  4. Let it dry twelve hours at room temperature, away from radiators.
  5. Add a second thin coat. Two thin coats beat one heavy coat every time.
  6. Repeat twice a year, and after any deep clean.

Fluoropolymer sprays suit smooth leather, wax suits oiled hides, and suede takes its own dedicated spray. Wax and grease darken the colour by roughly half a shade, which flatters natural leather and shows badly on pale hides. Full routine in how to condition leather.

Your bag got soaked: what to do, in order

Leave the straps hanging free while it dries. A wet strap pressed against a wet panel dries into a permanent shadow line, and that mark is harder to lift than the original soaking.

Blot with a dry towel, never rub. Empty it, open every compartment, then stuff it with plain paper to hold the shape. Dry it flat, in open air, for twelve to twenty four hours. No radiator, no hair dryer: heat shrinks the grain and cracks it for good.

A drying ring is fixed by lightly dampening the whole panel so the tidemark blends back in. Once dry, condition it. Water leaves with part of the natural oils, and a dried out hide drinks twice as fast next time. If a mark survives, our guide on how to remove stains from leather covers it.

Mistakes that cost the bag

Radiator drying leads the list, followed by storing a damp bag in a closed dust bag, which comes out covered in mould within a week. Then over spraying, which leaves a chalky haze on smooth leather, and fabric proofer used on suede, which mats the nap into clumps.

Last and terminal: the washing machine. The drum creases the grain, hot water denatures the tannage, and the bag comes out stiff, smaller and permanently marked. Regular care instead is covered in how to clean a leather bag.

Conclusion

Leather is never waterproof, only treated: test the drop, proof in two thin coats twice a year, and always air dry after a soaking. Coated hides handle rain with no upkeep, raw hides absorb it and mark. For a bag built for the morning commute, start with our leather messenger bags.

FAQ

Can leather ever be made fully waterproof?

No. Treatment buys minutes or hours depending on the finish, never immunity. Submerge it long enough and water gets through regardless.

How often should I reproof a leather bag?

Twice a year for daily use, and after every deep clean, since cleaning strips part of the treatment already there.

Does waterproofing spray darken leather?

A colourless fluoropolymer spray changes nothing visible. Waxes and greases darken by about half a shade, permanently, which shows most on pale colours.

How do I know if my bag is already treated?

The water drop test answers in thirty seconds: if it beads without darkening the spot, a finish is still protecting the hide.

Is vegetable tanned leather worse in rain?

It absorbs more and spots more visibly, yes. It also develops the richest patina, so the trade is deliberate rather than a defect.
