What is nappa leather? It is a very soft full grain leather, dyed through and tanned to keep a supple, fluid feel. You recognise it by its almost silky hand and the way it drapes like fabric. It is the leather of gloves, premium car seats and some luxury bags, rarely that of a leather shoulder bag for men carried every day.
Where the name nappa comes from
The name comes from Napa, California, where a tannery developed a process in the late nineteenth century to make soft, durable skins from sheep. It later spread to any grain leather, lamb, goat or calf, treated for softness. So it is neither a species nor a regulated standard: it is a family of finishes among the types of leather.
How to recognise nappa leather
- It folds without a sharp crease and springs back at once.
- The surface is smooth, with no embossed grain and very fine pores.
- It is dyed through: the edge matches the surface colour.
- It is thinner than typical bag leather, often under one millimetre.
A smooth but stiff leather is not nappa, even when sold as such: softness is its very definition. Compare it with bag grade full grain leather, which is thicker and firmer.
Strengths and limits on a bag
Nappa gives a luxurious look, low weight and a lovely touch. Its thinness also makes it sensitive to scratches, to repeated rubbing against a hip and to sagging under load. A nappa bag is handled with care, carried by hand or on one shoulder, and never set on the floor. For daily use, pebbled leather or an oiled finish copes far better with real life.
