Carry-On Weight Limit by Airline: US and International Rules

Quel poids sac cabine avion ?

Is there a carry-on weight limit? On the big US airlines, usually not: American, Delta, United, Southwest and JetBlue publish a size limit for the bag that goes in the overhead bin and no weight figure at all. Fly Frontier, Lufthansa, Air France or Emirates and the answer changes, with limits between 7 and 18 kg depending on the airline and the cabin. This guide compares the rules we read on each airline’s own page, explains who actually weighs bags, and shows how to stay under a carry-on weight limit without leaving half your clothes at home. If you are choosing the bag itself, start with our men’s travel bags, where the capacity is listed on every product page.

Key points

  • American, Delta, United, Southwest and JetBlue list no weight limit for a standard carry-on, only dimensions.
  • Frontier caps both the carry-on and the personal item at 35 lb.
  • Lufthansa allows 8 kg per carry-on, Air France 12 kg in total in Economy, Emirates 7 kg in Economy.
  • British Airways gives no figure on its baggage page but asks that you can lift the bag into the bin unassisted.
  • The personal item often counts toward the total on airlines that weigh, as it does at Air France.

Do US airlines have a carry-on weight limit?

For most domestic travelers the honest answer is no. On October 4, 2026 we read the carry-on pages of the five largest US carriers that sell a standard cabin bag, and none of them states a maximum weight for it:

  • American Airlines: carry-on up to 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm) including handles and wheels, personal item up to 18 x 14 x 8 inches. No weight figure.
  • Delta: 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 35 x 23 cm), or 45 linear inches in total. No weight figure.
  • United: 9 x 14 x 22 inches for the carry-on, 9 x 10 x 17 inches for the personal item. No weight figure. Basic Economy only includes the personal item, except on flights to South America and across the Atlantic or the Pacific.
  • Southwest: 24 x 16 x 10 inches, wheels and handles included. No weight figure.
  • JetBlue: 22 x 14 x 9 inches, and the airline says plainly that there is no weight limit as long as you can lift the bag yourself.

That last condition is the real rule everywhere. Cabin crew are not there to hoist your case into the bin, and a bag that is too heavy to lift above your head will be checked at the gate. In practice, size is what gets enforced in the United States: the metal sizer at the gate measures, it does not weigh. A soft travel bag for men that squeezes into the sizer is usually less of a problem than a rigid case at the very edge of the dimensions.

The exception is the ultra low cost model. Frontier publishes a 35 lb limit for both its carry-on (24 x 16 x 10 inches) and its personal item (18 x 14 x 8 inches). We could not read the current carry-on pages of Spirit or Alaska Airlines when we checked, so they are left out of this guide rather than quoted from memory.

Carry-on weight limit by airline

The table sums up what each airline’s own baggage page said on October 4, 2026. Rules change, especially on fares, so check your booking before you fly. For the bag itself, a travel backpack for men fits most of the size limits below.

Airline Carry-on size Carry-on weight limit Personal item
American Airlines 22 x 14 x 9 in (56 x 36 x 23 cm) None published 18 x 14 x 8 in
Delta 22 x 14 x 9 in (56 x 35 x 23 cm) None published Must fit under the seat
United 22 x 14 x 9 in (56 x 35 x 23 cm) None published 17 x 10 x 9 in
Southwest 24 x 16 x 10 in None published Must fit under the seat
JetBlue 22 x 14 x 9 in None, if you can lift it 17 x 13 x 8 in
Frontier 24 x 16 x 10 in 35 lb (15.9 kg) 18 x 14 x 8 in, 35 lb
British Airways 56 x 45 x 25 cm (22 x 18 x 10 in) No figure, lift it unassisted 40 x 30 x 15 cm
Lufthansa 55 x 40 x 23 cm 8 kg (17.6 lb) per bag 40 x 30 x 15 cm
Air France 55 x 35 x 25 cm 12 kg (26.4 lb) in total in Economy and Premium, 18 kg (40 lb) in Business and La Première 40 x 30 x 15 cm, included in the total
Emirates 55 x 38 x 22 cm 7 kg (15 lb) in Economy, 10 kg in Premium Economy Business and First: a second 7 kg piece

Two details are easy to miss. At Lufthansa, Business and First passengers may take two carry-on bags, each up to 8 kg, while Economy Basic on short and medium haul includes only the personal item. At Air France the 12 kg covers the cabin bag and the small bag together, so a heavy laptop bag eats into the same allowance.

Which airlines actually weigh carry-on bags

A published limit tells you which airlines can weigh your bag; it does not tell you how often they do. Traveler threads, like the Reddit discussion that tops this search, point the same way as the rules above. US carriers check size at the gate. The airlines that publish a figure, such as Lufthansa, Air France and Emirates in our table, are the ones that can put a cabin bag on the scale at check-in or at the boarding gate, and full flights are when it happens most. Low cost airlines tend to be the strictest, because the extra bag is part of what they sell.

Plan for the strictest airline on your itinerary. A trip that starts on Delta and connects to a Lufthansa flight is an 8 kg trip, not an unlimited one. The same logic applies to electronics: if you are unsure whether your laptop can go in the hold when a bag is gate checked, read our guide on whether you can put a laptop in checked luggage before you go.

How to stay under a carry-on weight limit

We recommend packing to the strictest airline on your ticket, and treating 7 kg as the safe target whenever one of your flights is on a carrier that weighs cabin bags. Seven or eight kilos disappear quickly. The bag itself is the first cost, then shoes, then electronics. A few habits make the difference:

  • Start with a light bag. A soft duffel or a backpack weighs less empty than a hard-shell spinner of the same size. Most product pages give the capacity in litres rather than the empty weight: in our own range of 128 travel bags, only one description states it, so weigh the empty bag yourself when it matters.
  • Wear the heavy items. Boots, a jacket and a sweater weigh nothing in your bag once they are on you.
  • Move dense items to your pockets or a belt bag. Phone, power bank, charger and passport add up. A men’s bum bag worn crossbody is rarely counted as a bag.
  • Pack for a week, not for every scenario. Our travel packing list builds a one week capsule that fits a cabin bag.
  • Use travel sizes. Liquids are heavy. Decant into small bottles and buy sunscreen at your destination.
  • Check the personal item rule. Where the personal item is not counted, move the laptop there; where it is, as at Air France, balance the two.

How to weigh your carry-on at home

You do not need special equipment. The bathroom scale method works for any bag: weigh yourself, then weigh yourself holding the packed bag, and subtract. Do it twice, because cheap scales drift by a few hundred grams. A handheld luggage scale is more precise and fits in the bag for the return flight, when souvenirs tend to push you over.

Weigh the bag exactly as you will carry it: laptop inside, liquids bag inside, jacket out if you plan to wear it. If you are within half a kilo of an 8 kg or 7 kg limit, move something to your pockets now rather than at the gate. And measure as well as weigh: wheels and handles count in every size limit above. If you are unsure about the size of the computer you are packing, our guide on how to measure laptop size explains the difference between screen size and case dimensions.

Bags that help you travel light

The lighter and more flexible the bag, the more of the allowance goes to what you actually need. A few places to start in our catalogue:

Conclusion

On American, Delta, United, Southwest and JetBlue, a carry-on weight limit is not published: respect the size and make sure you can lift the bag. Once a flight on Frontier, Lufthansa, Air France, Emirates or another airline that publishes a limit enters the trip, pack to that number, usually 7 to 12 kg in Economy. Weigh at home, wear the heavy things, and start from a light bag. To pack the bag itself, use our travel packing list, and to choose it, browse our men’s travel bags.

Frequently asked questions

Does Delta weigh carry-on bags?

Delta’s carry-on page lists dimensions, 22 x 14 x 9 inches or 45 linear inches, and no weight limit. Size is what the gate agents check. The bag still has to fit in the overhead bin or under the seat, and you must be able to place it there yourself.

Is there a weight limit for carry-on bags on American Airlines and United?

Neither airline publishes one for a standard carry-on. Both limit the size to 22 x 14 x 9 inches, wheels and handles included. United Basic Economy is the catch: on most routes it only includes a personal item that fits under the seat.

What happens if my carry-on is over the weight limit?

On airlines that publish a limit, an overweight cabin bag is usually checked into the hold, often with a fee if your fare has no checked bag. Remove your laptop, batteries, medication and valuables before you hand it over, because these belong in the cabin.

Does the personal item count toward the carry-on weight limit?

It depends on the airline. Air France counts the small bag inside the 12 kg total in Economy. Frontier gives the personal item its own 35 lb limit. Lufthansa sets the 8 kg limit per carry-on bag and gives the personal item a size limit of 40 x 30 x 15 cm.

How heavy can a carry-on be on international flights?

There is no single international rule. Among the airlines we checked, Emirates allows 7 kg in Economy, Lufthansa 8 kg per bag, and Air France 12 kg in total in Economy and 18 kg in Business. Always follow the airline that operates each flight.
