The best briefcase for men swallows the laptop and a flat folder without strain, then disappears on the shoulder. This guide ranks no model: it compares the size, weight and listed laptop of ten listings from our mens briefcase collection, read on 8 November 2026, and adds a calculation the listings do not make, the width margin between the bag and the machine. What a listing does not publish, we do not claim, and the cell reads “not published”.
What is the best briefcase for men for work?
The best briefcase for men at work, by the rule we use, is at least 1.6 inches (4 cm) wider than the laptop, holds a flat folder and weighs 2.6 lb (1.2 kg) or less empty. Across eight listings, the width margin runs from 1.74 to 5.10 inches, and the five published weights from 1.1 to 2.6 lb.
These two numbers, margin and weight, say more than “large capacity” or “business style”, words that several listings use. A work briefcase is judged by its width, not by its name. For the choice between formats, our guide messenger bag vs briefcase sets the two side by side, and best laptop bag for men covers bags built first around the machine.
Briefcase, attaché case or laptop bag: what is the difference?
A briefcase is a flat, rectangular bag built around a folder carried flat, with one or two handles on top. The attaché case keeps the same lines but thicker and stiffer, a laptop bag is sized first for the machine, and the line between the three is drawn by depth and structure.
In our listings the word changes from one supplier to the next: bags about 40 cm long are called “briefcase”, “shoulder bag” or “laptop bag” depending on the page. That is why this guide compares sizes, not names. The mens leather briefcase collection groups the thicker attaché-style formats, and the leather satchel for men collection the taller ones, for when a flat briefcase is not enough.
What size is a men’s briefcase?
A men’s briefcase measures 12.6 to 18.5 inches long, 9.8 to 13.4 high and 2.0 to 4.3 deep (32 to 47, 25 to 34 and 5 to 11 cm) on listings that publish sizes. Depth separates formats more than length: at 2 inches the bag is flat, at 4 inches an attaché case.
The table below gives the outside size, the weight and the laptop each listing names. Sizes marked “about” are given by the supplier with a tolerance. Weight stays “not published” when the listing does not give it: we weighed no bag. The last column is our own calculation: the length of the bag minus the width of the machine, explained in the next section. Inch values are our conversions from centimetres at 2.54 cm per inch, the factor given by NIST.
| Listing | Length x height x depth, in (cm) | Published weight | Laptop listed | Width margin, in (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Full grain briefcase, leather lining | 15.7 x 12.6 x 4.3 (40 x 32 x 11) | 2.4 lb (1.1 kg) | 15-inch flat, 16-inch with a push | 2.35 (5.96) |
| Full grain laptop bag, coffee | 15.7 x 11.0 x 3.9 (40 x 28 x 10) | 1.8 lb (830 g) | 16-inch | 1.74 (4.43) |
| Briefcase with two front pockets | about 16.1 x 11.8 x 2.8 (about 41 x 30 x 7) | not published | 15-inch if the laptop is slim | 2.74 (6.96) |
| Briefcase 47 cm, two pockets | about 18.5 x 13.4 x 3.1 (about 47 x 34 x 8) | not published | 15-inch depending on the model | 5.10 (12.96) |
| Large capacity briefcase | about 16.5 x 12.2 x 3.9 (about 42 x 31 x 10) | not published | 15-inch and A4 folders | 3.14 (7.96) |
| Crazy Horse laptop briefcase | 15.7 x 11.8 x 3.9 (40 x 30 x 10) | about 2.2 lb (about 1 kg) | 15.6-inch | 2.35 (5.96) |
| Briefcase in two lengths | 15.4 or 16.9 long (39 or 43), height not published | not published | 15-inch in the larger size | 3.53 (8.96) at 43 cm |
| Natural cowhide attaché case | 13.8 x 9.8 x 3.9 (35 x 25 x 10) | 2.6 lb (1.2 kg) | 13-inch, compact 14-inch | 1.81 (4.59) |
| Flat portfolio, 13.3-inch | not published | not published | 13.3-inch laptop or 12.9-inch tablet | cannot be calculated |
| Slim black document bag, A4 | 12.6 x 9.8 x 2.0 (32 x 25 x 5) | about 1.1 lb (about 500 g) | none, A4 documents flat | not applicable |
Three lessons come out of it. Length says nothing about weight: of the three 40 cm bags, the lightest weighs 830 g and the heaviest 1.1 kg. Five listings out of ten publish no weight at all, which is the first thing to ask before buying. And the flattest bag, at 5 cm deep, is the only one in the table that does not take a laptop.
Which briefcase size fits a 15-inch laptop?
A 15-inch laptop needs a briefcase at least 15 inches (38 cm) long: the width of the machine plus 1.6 inches (4 cm) of margin for leather and lining. According to Apple, the 15-inch MacBook Air measures 13.40 x 9.35 inches: a 15.7-inch bag leaves 2.35 inches, a 13.8-inch bag less than half an inch.
The machine sizes come from Apple’s own specifications: according to Apple (MacBook Air specifications), the 13-inch model measures 11.97 x 8.46 inches and the 15-inch model 13.40 x 9.35 inches. According to Apple (MacBook Pro specifications), the 14-inch model measures 12.31 x 8.71 inches and the 16-inch model 14.01 x 9.77 inches. These are the sizes of the machine alone, without a sleeve.
The margin in the table reads simply: the larger it is, the less the machine strains on the zip. The listing for our full grain laptop bag gives 16-inch compatibility on a 15.7-inch length, a 1.74-inch margin, and the 1.81-inch margin of the 13-inch attaché case is the next smallest. Both are enough for the machine alone, and a wider margin leaves more room if a sleeve or a charger shares the same compartment.
Two caveats. For the 15.6-inch Crazy Horse listing we use the 15-inch MacBook Air as a reference, because the listing names no machine. For listings that say “about 41 cm” or “about 47 cm”, the margin rests on a size given with a tolerance, so measure your own laptop before ordering.
Does an A4 or Letter folder fit flat in a briefcase?
An A4 or Letter folder fits flat in a briefcase at least 12.6 inches (32 cm) long and 9.1 inches (23 cm) high. According to Wikipedia, Letter measures 8.5 x 11 inches (215.9 x 279.4 mm) and A4 210 x 297 mm: the eight bags with published length and height all pass, the shortest measuring 32 x 25 cm.
The threshold comes from the longer side of the sheet, 29.7 cm for A4, plus a little room for leather and lining. The sizes in the table are outside sizes, so the usable space is slightly smaller, which is why we keep a margin. A4 is 1.8 cm longer than Letter, so a bag that takes A4 flat takes Letter too. Our slim black document bag states that it swallows a folder flat without bending anything.
The sources for the formats are Wikipedia’s pages on Letter paper size and paper sizes. For a binder or a folder with flaps, depth matters as much as length: read it on the listing before ordering.
How much does a leather briefcase weigh?
A leather briefcase weighs 1.1 to 2.6 lb (500 g to 1.2 kg) empty on the five listings that publish a weight. The slim 32 x 25 x 5 cm bag weighs about 500 g and the 35 x 25 x 10 cm attaché case 1.2 kg, 2.4 times more for an almost identical front.
Depth and lining weigh more than the material. The listing for our full grain briefcase gives 1.1 kg with its leather lining, against about 900 g for a fabric lining. At the same 40 cm length, the laptop bag with a padded compartment comes in at 830 g. Full grain keeps the original grain of the hide and develops a patina, but it is not judged by weight: the table shows no direct link between the finish of the leather and the grams.
For daily carrying, the useful figure is the empty weight plus what goes in: a 15-inch laptop, a charger and a folder add several times the weight of the bag. The most economical choice is the model whose weight is published and whose margin is just enough, not the widest one.
Handle, shoulder strap or under the arm: how to carry a briefcase?
A briefcase is carried by its handle, on the shoulder with a detachable strap, or under the arm when it is flat. Five listings in the table advertise a detachable or adjustable strap, so the carry can change with the trip.
The handle suits meetings, the strap suits public transport when both hands must stay free. The listing for the slim bag, 5 cm deep, says its strap clips on with two snap hooks and that the bag can also be carried under the arm. The thicker and fuller the bag, the more a strap spreads the load across the shoulder instead of the hand. For strap settings and which shoulder to choose, see messenger bag vs satchel.

Conclusion: laptop first, paper second, weight last
To choose a men’s briefcase, start from the laptop: read its width, add at least 1.6 inches (4 cm), then check that the folder fits flat and that the published weight stays at or below 2.6 lb (1.2 kg). Without sizes and weight in the listing, this calculation is impossible.
The mens briefcase and mens leather briefcase collections let you redo the calculation listing by listing, with the machine you actually carry.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a briefcase and an attaché case?
A briefcase is flat and built for a folder, 2.0 to 4.3 inches deep in our table, while an attaché case is thicker and stiffer. Suppliers use both words for the same shape in their listings, so only the measured sizes settle the question between the two.
What size briefcase for a 15-inch laptop?
A 15-inch laptop needs a briefcase at least 15 inches (38 cm) long, because the machine is 13.40 inches wide according to Apple for the 15-inch MacBook Air. A 15.7-inch bag leaves 2.35 inches of margin, a 13.8-inch bag under half an inch.
Can a briefcase be carried on the shoulder?
A briefcase can be carried on the shoulder when the listing advertises a detachable strap, as five listings in the table do. The slim 5 cm bag also states that it can be carried under the arm, and the others go by hand or on the shoulder.
Is full grain leather heavier than other leather?
Full grain leather is not heavier in itself: the 40 cm full grain laptop bag in the table weighs 830 g, while the 35 cm natural cowhide attaché case weighs 1.2 kg. The weight comes mostly from the depth of the bag and its lining.
