A structured bag: thick leather over a frame that gives it the stance of a classic briefcase. It takes a sixteen inch laptop, which few soft bags allow.
A rigid bag protects against side impacts and stands upright, which matters when you set it on the floor in a meeting room. It is heavier, bulkier on a crowded train, and it will not compress to fit under a seat.
Sixteen inches is the largest common laptop size. The compartment is cut for it, but measure your machine’s width anyway: older fifteen inch models are sometimes wider than a recent sixteen. Thick leather explains both the stance and the weight, and it is the corners and edges that wear first on a rigid bag.
