Full Grain Leather: What It Is, How to Spot It, How to Care

Surface d'un cuir pleine fleur avec son grain naturel

Full grain leather is the top tier of leather, and the term you find on the most durable messenger bags, satchels and briefcases. On labels it sits next to “genuine leather”, “top grain”, “split leather” or “cowhide”, names that do not describe the same quality at all. This guide explains what full grain leather is, how to tell it apart from the other layers of the hide, how it ages and how to care for it. Every model in our leather shoulder bags for men states its material.

What is full grain leather?

A cowhide is too thick to be used as it is in leather goods, so the tanner splits it into several layers. The top layer, the one that carried the hair, is called the grain. It is the densest, because its fibers are the tightest, and the strongest. On leather briefcases for men, it is the layer you expect to find.

Leather is called full grain when this top layer is kept intact, with no sanding and no correction of its surface. The natural grain stays visible: pores, small marks, shifts in color. Those irregularities are the sign of a leather that has not been disguised.

Full grain, top grain, split: the differences

Name What it is How it ages
Full grain intact top layer, natural grain develops a patina and improves
Top grain (corrected grain) top layer sanded, then embossed with a printed grain stays uniform, the surface can crack
Split leather lower layer, under the grain, often coated less resistant, wears faster
Bonded leather leather fibers ground and bound with resin breaks down over time

“Genuine leather” only guarantees that the material is leather, without saying which layer. A “genuine leather” bag can therefore be coated split leather, far less durable than full grain. PU leather, on the other hand, is a synthetic material with its own strengths, such as water resistance and no maintenance at all: it simply is not leather, and an honest product page says so. Our guide to full grain vs top grain leather compares the two top layers in detail.

How to spot full grain leather

  • The grain: up close, you see small irregular pores and a surface that changes from one area to another. A perfectly regular grain that repeats like a pattern often gives away a corrected grain.
  • The edge: on the side of a strap or a flap, full grain shows dense, continuous fibers, not a plastic layer on a backing.
  • The touch: it feels warm, supple and slightly oily, while a coated surface feels cold and smooth like varnish.
  • The water drop: on untreated full grain, it darkens the surface slightly before soaking in; on heavily coated leather, it beads up and never gets in.

The edge test is easiest on a leather messenger bag, where the strap and the flap show their cut side.

Full grain cowhide

Cowhide is the hide of an adult cow, the most widely used leather in bags. It offers a good balance of thickness, strength and suppleness, which makes it the reference material for messenger bags and briefcases. Cowhide can be full grain or not: the layer used makes the quality, not the animal. Oiled horse leather, known as crazy horse, is another family, recognizable by a marbled look that shifts under your finger. Many leather satchels for men are cut from full grain cowhide.

Patina: what makes full grain unique

Full grain leather does not wear out, it develops a patina. With time, light, friction and the oils of your hands, its color deepens slightly, its surface becomes glossier and more supple, and small scratches fade. A ten year old full grain briefcase often has more character than a new one. That evolution is unknown to corrected grain, frozen under its coating, and to synthetic leather. It shows most on brown leather bags for men, which darken and gain depth over the years.

Caring for full grain leather

Care is simple, as long as it is regular.

  1. Dust with a soft, dry cloth.
  2. Condition two to three times a year with a leather lotion or cream, in a thin layer, then buff.
  3. Let a wet bag dry in open air, away from a radiator, which would crack the leather.
  4. Store it in a fabric dust bag, never in a plastic bag that stops the leather from breathing.

Why full grain costs more

Only hides without major flaws can be finished as full grain, since nothing hides their surface. Hides marked by scars or insect bites are sanded and corrected. Full grain therefore uses the best hides, which explains its price, and also its lifespan: well cared for, it lasts for decades where a corrected grain ends up peeling. That is also why a full grain men’s briefcase is kept for years and repaired rather than replaced.

Conclusion

Full grain leather is the top layer of the hide, kept intact with its natural grain. It is the densest, the strongest and the only one that gets better with time as it builds a patina. Do not confuse full grain with “genuine leather”, which only guarantees that leather is present, or with corrected grain and split leather, which last less. Check the grain, the edge and the touch, then condition your leather two to three times a year. Browse our leather shoulder bags and our leather messenger bags for men.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between full grain and genuine leather?

“Genuine leather” only means the material is leather. “Full grain” means the intact top layer of the hide is used, the best one.

Is full grain leather waterproof?

No. It handles a shower, but if it gets soaked it must dry slowly in open air.

Does full grain leather scratch?

It marks slightly, but surface scratches fade with the patina and a little cream.

Is cowhide always full grain?

Not necessarily. Cowhide names the animal; full grain names the layer of the hide that is used.
