Leather or nylon for a chest bag?

Nylon wins on weight and on rain. A coated nylon chest bag of the same volume weighs roughly a third of its leather equivalent, and a shower does nothing to it. Leather wins on how it looks after two years and on how it holds its shape when the bag is empty, which matters because a chest bag is empty more often than it is full.

The practical rule from our returns: buyers who wear the bag over a jacket in winter and a t shirt in summer are happier with nylon, because leather marks where the strap rubs a light fabric. Buyers who wear it as part of an outfit rather than as equipment keep the leather.

Anti-theft designs, and what the term really means

Anti-theft on a chest bag means one of three things, and the listings rarely say which. First, the main zip faces the body so it cannot be opened from the front. Second, the zip pulls lock together. Third, the strap has a steel cable running through the webbing so it cannot be cut. Only the first is common in our range and it is the one that actually prevents the ordinary pickpocket, because a chest bag worn correctly is already in your field of view.

If you are buying for crowded transit specifically, choose a model where the largest compartment opens against the chest, and ignore the padlock illustrations.

Questions we get before purchase

Which shoulder should the strap go over? Whichever leaves your dominant hand free. The bag then sits on the opposite hip or across the sternum depending on strap length. Every model in this range is symmetrical, so there is no left handed or right handed version to choose. Models with the main zip against the body do have a correct orientation, and it is printed on the label.

Can a chest bag be worn under a jacket? Only the models under 18 cm of front panel width. Above that the bag creates a visible block and the zip presses against the ribs when you sit. If you want a bag that disappears under a coat, stay in the 15.90 to 34.90 EUR band, where the shells are thinnest.

How do you clean a nylon chest bag? Cold water, a soft brush and no detergent on the coated face. Detergent strips the water repellent coating, which is the single most common way these bags lose their weather resistance long before the fabric wears out. Leather models take a neutral cream, never a silicone spray.
