Start with the laptop, not the bag

The single measurement that rules out most of a catalogue is the laptop sleeve, and it is the one buyers check last. A 15.6 in laptop does not fit a sleeve cut for 14 in, and a 14 in laptop rattles in a sleeve cut for 17 in, which is worse than it sounds because the corners take the impact instead of the padding. Match the sleeve first, then choose on everything else.

How many litres does a work backpack actually need?

Between 22 and 30 litres for a normal working day. Below 22 you are choosing between the laptop and a lunch. Above 30 the bag stops looking like a work bag and starts looking like hand luggage, which is fine if you travel weekly and wrong if you commute. The exception is the expandable design, which sits at 25 litres closed and opens to 35 for the days you fly.

Compare the 40 to 120 EUR models

The USB port question

Many models in this range carry a USB socket on the strap or the side panel. It is worth knowing exactly what it is, because the listings are vague and buyers are routinely disappointed. It is a pass through cable, not a battery. There is no power in the bag. You put your own power bank in the internal pocket, plug it into the inside end, and the socket on the outside becomes a convenient place to plug your phone without opening the bag.

That is genuinely useful on a train. It is not a charger, and a bag advertised as a charging backpack that shipped without a battery is not faulty.

Water resistance, and where bags actually leak

A water repellent face fabric handles rain for the length of a walk to the station. Sustained rain gets in through three places that no coating protects: the zip teeth, the seams at the base corners, and the panel where the shoulder straps are stitched. If you cycle to work in a wet climate, the useful feature is not a coated face, it is a covered zip and a base cut from a laminated panel rather than the same fabric as the sides.

Questions before purchase

Will a work backpack fit under an airline seat? The 18 to 22 litre models yes, most of the 22 to 30 litre models yes when not overfilled, the 30 litre and up no. Airline personal item limits vary, so check yours against the pack dimensions rather than the litre figure, which is measured differently by every manufacturer.

Can these be carried on one shoulder? Only the smaller ones comfortably. Above 25 litres the strap geometry assumes both shoulders and the bag pulls sideways on one. If you want a bag you can sling, look at a crossbody format instead of a backpack.

How do you stop the base wearing through? Do not set the bag down on the same corner every day. That sounds trivial and it is the single most common wear point we see in returns. Models with a reinforced or laminated base panel resist it, and they start around 60 EUR.

Is a leather work backpack practical? Heavier by roughly a third at equal volume, and it marks in rain. It holds shape better when empty and looks appropriate in more places. It suits a fixed office commute, not a daily bike ride.
