How many liters you actually need
Day hikes run 18 to 30 liters. Overnight trips start around 40. Anything above 55 is multi-day or winter gear. Buying larger than needed is not free: an oversized pack invites you to fill it, and weight is the thing that hurts.
The hip belt does the work
On a properly fitted pack, roughly 80 percent of the load rests on your hips, not your shoulders. If a pack has a thin nylon waist strap rather than a padded belt, it is a commuter bag with trail styling.
Ventilation and rain
A suspended mesh back panel keeps a gap between you and the pack, which matters more in humid heat than any fabric claim. Most packs are shower resistant at best, so a separate rain cover is standard equipment rather than an upsell.
