Waxed or untreated
Waxed canvas repels rain and develops creases that hold their shape, much like leather patina. Untreated canvas breathes better, washes more easily and soaks through in a downpour. Neither is superior, they answer different questions.
How it ages
Canvas fades at stress points and softens where you handle it. Unlike leather, it does not crack, and a tear can usually be patched rather than replaced. That repairability is a genuine advantage for a bag you intend to keep.
Cleaning
Brush dry first, then spot clean with mild soap and cold water. Never machine wash waxed canvas, which strips the coating and leaves the fabric worse than before it was treated.
